(Warning: Typos Intact, Not Legal Advice)
Where can I go to get a copy of my mom’s poa
the original copies were left inside the house and the city demolished the house
Answer: I have to admit, this is a unique situation. I’ve never dealt with retrieving documents from a house that was demolished by the city. You could potentially go to the landfill where the remains of the house were taken, but that seems like a nearly impossible task.
Perhaps someone else might have a copy of the power of attorney. If the power of attorney was used to transfer ownership of the house — which seems unlikely, but if it did happen—then the document would have been recorded at the register of deeds.
At this point, my advice is to visit the register of deeds and review the title history of the demolished house. There’s a chance that the power of attorney was recorded there. Also, keep in mind that safe deposit boxes are relatively inexpensive and could be a good option for safeguarding important documents in the future.
